When the World Health Organization and the U.S. Department of Health claim, “It’s not a matter of if, but a matter of when,” community leaders jump into action.
PandemicPrep.Org is comprised of companies, hospitals, school districts, and governmental agencies. Representatives from each sector are voluntarily coming together to share and express their ideas and concerns. Companies such as Energizer, AT&T, and Sabreliner are joining committees with school districts, such as Parkway. Hospitals including Barnes Jewish and St. Louis University are also contributing, all sharing one goal, to create an understanding of what will happen if a pandemic strikes St. Louis. PandemicPrep.Org members understand that no matter how good of a plan they have for their organization, it is useless if other organizations they come in contact with aren’t prepared.
According to the St. Louis Health Department, schools will be the first to shut down. Government offices and even businesses may follow. It is estimated that 30-40% of companies’ workforces will be absent with Bird Flu, and that isn’t counting the number of employees who will have to be home caring for their children. However, there are no definite conditions for what will constitute a shut-down, and up till now there has been no medium for schools and businesses to communicate with one another. In addition, companies that rely on each other for essential services are now worried about what will happen if their supplies don’t arrive. Here lies the goal of PandemicPrep.Org.
PandemicPrep.Org is laying the groundwork for St. Louis’s action plan. It is raising the questions and developing the strategy for St. Louis. This plan will assist businesses, schools, and local governments with preparing and communicating, giving each other informed answers and raising important concerns. PandeicPrep.Org gives decision makers access to a new world of resources – each other. With insights and suggestions from across the aisle, St. Louis is gearing up for pandemic preparedness.
